Dr. Yan Chow

Director of Kaiser Permanente (KP) Information Technology’s Innovation & Advanced Technology

Dr. Yan Chow is the Director of Kaiser Permanente (KP) Information Technology’s Innovation & Advanced Technology Group (IAT). IAT identifies, assesses, and makes internal recommendations on new and emerging clinical information technologies that will impact health care in the next 2 to 5 years. IAT is affiliated with KP’s Sidney R. Garfield Center for Health Care Innovation, an advanced 37,000-sf laboratory for care delivery simulation.

Dr. Chow has had a successful clinical practice at KP for 26 years. For 10 of those years, he was also involved in regional IT management. Dr. Chow has founded and advised a number of start ups in the Internet, health care technology, storage, and database spaces. In 2004 he was awarded 3 U.S. patents for co-inventing a network storage architecture 2 orders of magnitude faster than competitive designs. He also developed commercial database software that accelerated very large database (VLB) processing 240-fold. He has been an author and invited speaker at industry conferences.

Dr. Chow earned his A.B. with honors from Harvard University and his M.D. from the University of California at San Diego. In 2005 he received his MBA from the University of California at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, where he graduated as valedictorian.

Dr. Dan Riskin

CEO, Vanguard Medical Technologies/ Professor, Stanford University Medical Hospital

Dr. Daniel Riskin is the President of Interventional Dynamics and a Consulting Assistant Professor at Stanford University. He was previously the Health Care IT Entrepreneur in Residence at Mohr Davidow Ventures and Chief Scientific Advisor of Wadsworth Medical Technologies. With 15 years of clinical experience and 20 years of experience in medical technology development, he brings a diverse background to his work. Dr. Riskin is a national expert in health care information technology and medical device development. He has won awards from Technology Review and the American Medical Association. He was an invited member of the Health care Advisory Committee for the Obama Campaign. He has been an invited speaker on medical technology development at the NIH, DARPA, NASA, Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. Dr. Riskin earned an MBA with a focus in biomedical engineering from MIT Sloan and completed the prestigious Biodesign Innovation Fellowship at Stanford. His medical training includes an MD from Boston University, surgical residency at UCLA, and a critical care fellowship at Stanford. He is a dual-boarded physician and continues to practice and teach one day a week.

Ana Pinczuk

Vice President, Global Technical Services, Cisco

Ana Pinczuk is Vice President, Global Technical Center within the Cisco Services organization. She is responsible for a global team of 2000 professionals that deliver global technical support, define the global service experience, and partner with engineering to drive product excellence. Ana has a diverse background, having been in Services, Marketing, Sales, Business Development, and Engineering roles throughout her professional career. Within Cisco, Ana has led diverse teams including Software Development, Test, Release Engineering, Product Management, Solution Development, Engineering IT and Technical Services. Prior to Cisco, Ana spent 15 years at AT&T and Lucent where she held key roles such as VP of Internet Technologies responsible for development and deployment of AT&T’s Internet backbone and Sales Client Director for the JP Morgan account.

Elisabeth Paté-Cornell

Chair/Professor of Engineering, Stanford University

Dr. M. Elisabeth Paté-Cornell was born in Dakar, Senegal, in 1948. She attended public high schools both in Dakar and in La Rochelle, France. Her undergraduate degree is in mathematics and physics (BS, Marseilles, France, 1968), and her first graduate degrees are in applied mathematics and computer science (MS and Engineer Degree, Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble, France, 1970; 1971). In 1971 she came to study and live in the United States, where she has been a citizen since 1986. She received a Masters degree in Operations Research (OR) in 1972 and a Ph.D. in Engineering-Economic Systems (EES) in 1978, both from Stanford University. She then was an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at MIT, before joining the Stanford faculty in 1981, where she became Professor (in 1991) and then Chair (in 1997) in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM). In 1999, she was named the Burt and Deedee McMurtry Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University. She is presently Professor and Chair of the Department of Management Science and Engineering, as well as a Senior Fellow (by courtesy) of the Stanford Institute for International Studies.

Anant Jhingran

IBM Fellow, VP & CTO of Information Management, IBM

Dr. Anant Jhingran is an IBM Fellow, VP and CTO for IBM's Information Management Division. He is deeply involved in the IBM's middleware in the cloud (including co-chairmanship of IBM's Cloud Computing Architecture Board), and for the technical strategy of products and solutions in databases, content management, business intelligence and information integration.

Prior to this job, Dr. Jhingran lead the IBM team designing and building solutions to meet the requirements of business analytics on structured and unstructured data. He has also been the director of Computer Science at the IBM Almaden Research Center and before that, senior manager for e-Commerce and data management at IBM's T. J. Watson Research Center. Anant received his Ph.D. from UC at Berkeley in 1990.

Anant has received several patents and awards for DB2.

Thomas Li

Director, IBM Research - China & GCG Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Thomas Li is the Chief Technology Officer of IBM Greater China Group and the Director of IBM Research - China. Thomas leads two IBM wholly-owned research laboratories in Beijing and Shanghai and co-leads two joint research institutes with China local government and national enterprise in Shenyang and Shanghai. Under Thomas' leadership, IBM Research - China has been a significant contributor in advancing the technology development in the following areas: cloud computing, information analytics and mathematic optimization, services science, Internet of Things, and Internet-based Next Generation Software. As the CTO of IBM GCG, Thomas is the major driver of IBM Smarter Planet innovations focusing on building ecosystem thru partnership with academia, government and other research institutes globally.

Thomas is a strategist as well as a pragmatist. He established the ground-breaking In-Market Research approach that has propelled a number of successful pioneer projects, including SaaS, Logistics & Supply Chain Management, Health Care systems, Power Management, and Business Transformation.

Gerard M. Mooney

General Manager Global Government and Education IBM Corporation

Gerry Mooney is currently General Manager, Global Government and Education, with responsibility for understanding client needs, defining IBM's strategy, direction, selecting investment areas, development of solutions, creating marketing programs, and directing the deployment of IBM resources worldwide for these two industry groups. Both these industries are playing a key role in IBM’s smarter planet. Since joining IBM in 2000 Mooney has held a series of increasingly responsible positions in venture capital, strategy, technology, operations and sales. Mooney was IBM’s Vice President, Corporate Strategy with worldwide responsibility for IBM’s Emerging Business Opportunities program, focusing on growth and innovation. His team worked with the IBM senior leadership team to create new market and growth opportunities by leveraging IBM’s leadership in industry and technology innovation. His team was responsible for incubating the set of initiatives that now form the center of IBM’s successful Smarter Planet offerings. As a result, IBM now plays – a leading role in the transformation and modernization of governments and cities around the world in core functions like Intelligent Transportation, Advanced Water Management, Smart Grids and Green Buildings as well as traditional government services. Mooney also had responsibility for IBM Venture Capital organization whose mission is to leverage relations with top tier Venture Capital firms and their portfolio companies to enable development of ecosystems around key IBM growth initiatives and evolving market opportunities in industries that IBM serves. Win-win relations with VC firms include sharing and building emerging technology and market roadmaps, working with key portfolio companies to explore the best methods to deliver IT innovations to top customers, and connecting external opportunities to the right groups within IBM to pursue those opportunities. He founded this organization for IBM in 2000.

Guruduth Banavar

VP & CTO of Public Sector, IBM

Dr. Guruduth Banavar is Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of the Global Public Sector in IBM. In this role, he is responsible for providing technical leadership across the Public Sector, with a particular focus on IBM’s Smarter Cities initiatives to capture strategic opportunities, improve upon solutions, harvest core assets, and maintain a vital link to IBM Research.

Previously, Dr. Banavar was the Director of IBM Research in India, one of eight labs of the worldleading IBM Research Division. He was responsible for establishing India as a pre-eminent research lab in the areas of services research and mobile computing. He also created the Bangalore branch of IBM Research as well as a Collaboratory with the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad. In his additional role as Chief Technologist (CTO) of IBM India / South Asia, Guru led the creation of a technical leadership group, a regional technical strategy, and sales enablers aligned with the business objectives. Finally, he served as the external face and spokesperson for IBM’s technology leadership in India.

Earlier, Dr. Banavar worked for 10 years at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York, which he joined in 1995 after his PhD. His broad technical interests and contributions have been in Service Science, Pervasive Computing, Distributed Systems, and Programming Models. Guru has published more than 40 research papers in top international forums, invented more than 25 US patents, chaired major international technical conferences and workshops in his research areas, and served on PhD committees in major US universities.

Ray Harishankar

IBM Fellow & CTO of Global Solutions, Global Business Services, IBM

Ray Harishankar is an IBM Fellow and the CTO of Global Solutions & Asset Management within Global Business Services. In that role, Ray defines & operationalizes strategies for GBS to have a strong portfolio of Business Solutions & Service Oriented Architecture based assets. Ray is currently focused on identifying strategies by which Global Business Services can leverage cloud computing technologies. Ray played a leadership role in establishing the Global Business Solutions Center (GBSC) in India & China, was responsible for establishing a development capability for high value SOA based assets within GBSC and continues to provide ongoing technical direction & guidance to that center. Ray was instrumental in establishing an architect profession in India and in growing & maintaining the vitality of that community.

James C. Spohrer

Director of IBM Global University Programs

Director of IBM Global University Programs since 2009, Jim founded IBM's first Service Research group in 2003 at the Almaden Research Center with a focus on STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) for Service Sector innovations. He led this group to attain eight times return on investment with two IBM outstanding and nine accomplishment awards. Working with service research pioneers from many academic disciplines, Jim advocates for Service Science, Management, Engineering, and Design (SSMED) as an integrative extended-STEM framework for global competency development, economic growth, and advancement of science. In 2000, Jim became the founding CTO of IBM’s first Venture Capital Relations group in Silicon Valley. In the mid 1990’s, he lead Apple Computer’s Learning Technologies group, where he was awarded DEST (Distinguished Engineer Scientist and Technologist) status. Jim received a Ph.D. in Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence from Yale University and a B.S. in Physics from MIT.

Manish Gupta

Director of IBM Research-India, Chief Technologist for IBM India/South Asia

Manish Gupta is the Director of IBM Research - India and Chief Technologist for IBM India/South Asia. He leads a team developing breakthrough technologies underlying innovation in Services, Software and Systems, and is leading the IBM Research activities across the world in the Mobile Web area. Previously, he has held senior leadership positions at IBM Research - India, IBM India Systems and Technology Lab, and the T. J. Watson Research Center, where he led research on software for the IBM Blue Gene supercomputer. IBM was awarded the 2008 National Medal of Technology and Innovation for the invention of the Blue Gene supercomputer by US President Barack Obama in October 2009. Manish received a B. Tech. in Computer Science from IIT Delhi in 1987 and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1992. He has co-authored over 70 papers, with more than 3000 citations in Google Scholar, in the areas of high performance compilers, parallel computing, and Java Virtual Machine optimizations, and has filed eighteen patents.

Manish has received two Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards and the Gerstner Team Award for Client Excellence at IBM, and has been invited to give keynotes at several international conferences and workshops. He is an ACM Distinguished Scientist and a member of the IBM Academy of Technology.

Dr. Kesh Narayanan

Division Director National Science Foundation

Dr. Kesh Narayanan is the Division Director of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships (IIP) within the Directorate for Engineering (ENG) at NSF. The mission of the division of IIP is to catalyze the transformation of discovery into societal benefits and manages partnership programs such as: Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers, Partnerships for Innovation, Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison with Industry.

Prior to his current assignment, he served NSF in various capacities. He has played a major role in shaping the NSF Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs to accelerate technological innovation by aligning the programs with the investment market opportunities. As acting Division Director of Design, Manufacture and Industrial Innovation, he identified academic opportunities for manufacturing research to impact on the growing service sector economy as well as on the emerging nanotechnology. He was a member of the Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) working group that launched the NSF PFI program.

He joined NSF in 1994 from Certainteed, where he held the position of Chief Scientist for the building materials division. His longest tenure, spanning 20 years, was at the Norton Company. As the R&D Director of the Norton Bonded Abrasives Business, he led the worldwide introduction of new products, with a track record of identifying and developing new products accounting for 25% of total sales.

Dr. Kesh Narayanan received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1974 and B.Tech. in Metallurgical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1967.

Scott Weller

Vice President, Strategy and Office of the Chief Technologist,HP Technology Services

Scott Weller is Vice President, Strategy and Office of the Chief Technologist for HP Technology Services, responsible for business and technology strategy including developing market insight, business path advocacy, strategic partnerships, and M&A. Mr. Weller is also responsible for leading key innovation and transformation initiatives across the business. Mr. Weller holds 5 patents and is a member of the HP Labs Software and Services Board. Mr. Weller was previously with IBM Global Services where he led the selling and delivery of business consulting and major IT programs for Fortune 100 clients. Prior to IBM, Mr. Weller was with Xerox where he held a number of management positions including embedded systems R&D, NPI program management, and technology strategy. Jamie Erbes

Head of Services Research, HP Labs

Jamie Erbes has more than 20 years of leadership, innovation and influence in networks, data centers and workflow automation. As director of Services Research in HP Labs, she is responsible for research and development of operating models, process automation and service analysis algorithms to help HP and its customers make the most of a future where we see “Everything as a Service.”

Previously, Erbes was chief technology officer for the Software and Solutions business at HP, supporting the company-wide software strategy for IT management software, business technology optimization, as well as communications and media solutions.

Erbes is a noted industry expert on automation software, cloud computing, business optimization and IT outsourcing. Her insight has appeared in publications such as Forbes, ZDNet, eWeek and The Australian.

Prior to joining EDS, she held numerous leadership roles at LoudCloud Inc., where she led the first releases of Opsware and other web-hosting automation solutions.

Rich Friedrich

Rich Friedrich is the Director of the Strategy and Innovation Office in HP Labs and reports directly to the Senior Vice President of Research. Leading a global team, he is responsible for the strategy and portfolio management of HP's central research organization, applying Open Innovation to amplify and accelerate research results, and technology transfer to effectively monetize these technologies.

Rich is an active participant in government-industry-university partnerships through such groups as the US National Academies Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable. He his on the board of advisors for four major universities including the University of Illinois and the University of California, San Diego, and is a co-inventor on fifteen patents.

Dan Gonos

Chief Technologist/Fellow Worldwide Industry Software & Services HP Enterprise Services

Dan Gonos, an HP Fellow, is the chief technologist for HP Enterprise Services Worldwide Industry Software and Services . As a Fellow, Gonos leads the program’s activities for HP clients in healthcare and government worldwide.

Gonos has more than 25 years of IT experience, including information technology strategy and planning, business and technology assessments, new business development, capacity and performance planning, performance review, software archeology, methodology development, and requirements definition and management. He is an expert in developing technological implementations of business process improvements through the application of best practices. In 2005, Gonos was named EDS Distinguished SE. As an EDS Distinguished SE, he worked on and assisted with significant EDS internal and external technological problems based on expertise, often acting as an applied technology expert leading large scale projects.

Douglas D. Chey

HP Fellow and Chief Technologist

Douglas D. Chey is an HP Fellow and the Chief Technologist for the Communications, Media & Entertainment (CME) and Consumer & Transportation (C&T) Industry groups at HP Enterprise Services.

In this role, he is responsible for ensuring close alignment with the service lines, regions and industries to drive technology and offering strategies, provide a proactive feedback loop between customer’s needs and the future direction of the HP Enterprise Services portfolio offerings, and support innovation programs and account engagement activities.

Ephraim Feig

IEEE Fellow

Dr. Ephraim Feig is Associate CIO for Vision and Strategy at the Social Security Administration, responsible for its Enterprise Architecture and IT strategy. His office is also responsible for the Agency’s HIT (Health Information Technology) initiative and the preparation of legally mandated strategy and planning documents. Previously, he was Senior Director of Services Architecture at Motorola (2006-2008); CTO and Chief Marketing Officer at Kintera (2000-2006), a pioneering SaaS (Software as a Service) company he helped start and then take public in 2003 (later bought by Blackbaud); and research scientist and manager at IBM (1980-2000).

He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a founding member of the IEEE Technical Committee on Services Computing, Associate Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Services Computing, Associate Editor of the International Journal on Web Services Research, and Program Chair of IEEE Services 2010. Recent professional activities include General Chair of IEEE Services Congress and IEEE Cloud Computing 2009, Program Chair of IEEE-SCC (Services Computing Conference) 2008, General Chair of IEEE-SCC 2007 and Program Chair of IEEE-ICWS (International Conference on Web Services) 2006. Dr. Feig was until recently a member of the Tech Coast Angels and a partner with San Diego Social Venture Partners. He has served on the Board of Directors of the San Diego Symphony in 2006-2008 and was on advisory boards at IBM, UCSD, USD and CUNY.

He has a Ph.D. in Mathematics, has published over 100 technical papers, holds 30 US patents, and has taught at eight universities, including Columbia University, the City College of NY, and UCSD.

Ola Hubertsson

Ola is responsible for the Network Architecture Evolution Strategy at Ericsson Group. He joined Ericsson in 1992 to work with PDC system development and to head system management for the PDC business unit. Later on, he switched to network products for GSM and WCDMA before joining Ericsson Group Function Technology & Portfolio Management. Ola holds an MSc in Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering from the Institute of Technology at Linköping University, Sweden.

Ian Oppermann

Director, CSIRO's ICT Centre

Ian Oppermann is the Director of CSIRO's ICT Centre. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is Australia's national science agency and one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world. The ICT Centre is a business unit within the CSIRO addresses major scientific challenges in Smartgrids, Wireless Communications, Robotics, Information Theory and eHealth Applications. Prior to joining CSIRO, Ian was Head, Sales Partnering and GTM for Nokia Siemens Networks’ software business and before that, Director of the Performance Business Line in Nokia Networks. Prior to joining Nokia, Ian was director of the Centre for Wireless Communications, a self funded research centre in Finland.

Ian has contributed to 6 books as editor or chapter authors, authored or co-authored approximately 120 journal and conference papers. Ian has a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering from Sydney.

Theresa Anna Maldonado

Ph.D., P.E., Division Director, Engineering Education & Centers Directorate for Engineering National Science Foundation

Dr. Theresa Maldonado is the Division Director of Engineering Education and Centers (EEC) in the Directorate for Engineering at the National Science Foundation (NSF). The EEC Division integrates basic research from multiple disciplines into strategic frameworks critical to addressing societal grand challenges and to promoting innovation. The research portfolio supported by EEC spans both the physical and the life sciences and engineering, from nanostructured materials to new device concepts, subsystems, and systems. Applications range across a wide spectrum, including energy, medicine, telecommunications, nanoelectronics, manufacturing, civil infrastructure, the environment, computer networks, cyber security, and others. Also included are formal scholarly studies in engineering education and on how people learn.

Dr. Maldonado earned the Ph.D., M.S.E.E., and B.E.E. with Highest Honors degrees in Electrical Engineering, all from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and she is a registered Professional Engineer in Texas. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the NSF Presidential Young Investigator award in 1991 in support of her work in electro-optics and nonlinear optics as well as the Halliburton Award for Teaching Excellence (1992) and the Halliburton Award for Outstanding Young Faculty (1993), both from the College of Engineering at UTA. She was an invited participant in numerous activities such as the Frontiers of Engineering, two German-American Frontiers of Engineering events, plus other advisory committees of the National Academy of Engineering; the National Petroleum Council Supply and Infrastructure Task Force; immediate past chair of the Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering (2006-10), which reports to Congress through the NSF Director; and past member of the NSF Math and Physical Sciences Advisory Committee (2006-10). She was inducted into the Inaugural Council of Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni at Georgia Tech in 1995. She is a Senior Member of IEEE and member of the Optical Society of America, SPIE, AAAS, ASEE, and Sigma Xi.
